HENRI ROUART
Henri Rouart (also Stanislas-Henri Rouart; * 2 October 1833 in Paris; † 2 January
1912 in Paris) was a French Impressionist painter and
art collector. He was the son of a wealthy manufacturer of military uniforms. He was a classmate of
Edgar Degas at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. He was to remain
good friends with the latter throughout
his life. Degas painted several
pictures of Rouart and his family. Rouart himself owned works
by both Degas and Corot, with whom
he had studied (with Camille Pissarro, among others) as well as with Jean-François Millet and many others. His works were shown
at the Paris Salons of 1868, 1869, 1870 and 1872, among others.
In 1873, together with his friend Degas and many other French Impressionists, he founded the Community of Painters, Sculptors, Sculptors and Lithographers, whose first exhibition
was held in the studio of the well-known Parisian photographer Nadar and signified, so to speak, the manifestation
of Impressionism. Some portraits that Degas had made of Rouart
were also on display there.
Rouart was not
only a collector of the works of his friends, but also of the old masters.
At the auction of the works he owned
at his death in 1912, 77 works
by old masters
were sold alongside 285 paintings by the Impressionists.
After his death, his
important collection of
Daumier works went largely to his family and sons:

des Impressionismus und Kunstsammler. Er war der Sohn eines wohlhabenden
Fabrikanten von Militäruniformen. Er war Mitschüler von Edgar Degas am Lycée Louis-le-Grand. Mit diesem
sollte er sein Leben lang gut befreundet bleiben. So malte Degas einige Bilder
von Rouart und seiner Familie. Rouart
selbst besaß Werke sowohl von Degas als auch von Corot,
bei dem er (unter anderem mit Camille Pissarro)
ebenso gelernt hatte wie bei Jean-François Millet und
vielen weiteren. Seine Werke waren unter anderem auf den Pariser Salons 1868,
1869, 1870 und 1872 zu sehen.
Im Jahr 1873 gründete er mit seinem Freund Degas und vielen
weiteren französischen Impressionisten die Gemeinschaft der Maler, Skulpteuren, Bildhauern und Lithographen, deren erste
Ausstellung in dem Atelier des bekannten Pariser Fotografen Nadar
stattfand und sozusagen die Manifestierung des Impressionismus bedeutet. Auch
einige Porträts, die Degas von Rouart angefertigt
hatte, waren dort zu sehen.
Rouart war nicht nur ein Sammler
der Werke seiner Freunde, sondern auch der alten Meister. Bei der Versteigerung
der Werke, die er bei seinem Tod 1912 besaß, wurden neben 285 Bildern der Impressionisten
auch 77 alte Werke verkauft.
Seine
bedeutende Sammlung von Daumier Werken ging nach seinem Tod grossteils an seine
Familie und seine Söhne:
